About us

Ninki Nanka encounters foundation

For several years prior to this Adama and Lucy led on exploring the feasibility of the Ninki Nanka Trail through an informal partnership between the Gambia Tourism Board, Leeds Beckett University, the ITTOG (Institute of Travel and Tourism of The Gambia), ASSERT (non-profit Association of Small-Scale Enterprises in Responsible Tourism), Gambia River Excursions and other partners committed to the idea of the trail and responsible tourism. In 2019 the trail received some funding from the Gambia Youth Empowerment Project (ITC) to support communities and other tourism stakeholders to take the development of the Ninki Nanka Trail products/ destination further. Since 2020 the development of trail has been formalised through the formation of the NNE Foundation and several more partners have joined us in taking this ambitious idea further such as the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), My Gambia and the TUI Care Foundation.

What are our goals?

The primary aim of the Ninki Nanka Encounters Foundation is to benefit Gambian communities through supporting the responsible development of the Ninki Nanka Trail, an exciting new community-based tourism initiative that aims to:

  • Disperse economic benefit of tourism to rural areas

  • Diversify Gambia’s tourism product through community-based, natural and cultural heritage experiences

  • Harness the untapped potential of The River Gambia for the benefit of local people

‘The trails’ immersive experiences and experiential learning tours along The River Gambia are designed to create inspiring, cultural interaction between tourists and local people, and offer unique opportunities to learn more about The Gambia. Our programmes aim to demonstrate responsible tourism in practice and all profits are ploughed back into the work of our charity.

In a nutshell, Ninki Nanka Encounters has the following five main goals:

  1. Support the delivery of the Ninki Nanka Trail as a new, responsible, high quality community- based tourism (CBT) product rooted in The Gambia

  2. Work in partnership with key stakeholders to pioneer a responsible management approach to developing new CBT markets and products along the Ninki Nanka Trail

  3. Build capacity of small businesses and communities along the Ninki Nanka Trail to access tourists and develop responsible tourism products which improve local livelihoods

  4. Create extraordinary, mutually beneficial interaction and cultural encounters between tourists, local people and industry stakeholders along the Ninki Nanka Trail

  5. Use tourism activities to protect and raise awareness about The Gambia’s natural and cultural heritage
